Toasting Jessica Harris & Bryant Terry
While basking in the success of an intimate gathering to introduce cookbook authors Bryant Terry and Dr. Jessica B. Harris, I gazed at How To Be: Contemporary Etiquette for African American by Harriette Cole -- my bible on "home training" or modern manners 101. Flipping through the book, I found the perfect words to sum up a night that celebrated our elders, community and the power of connections.
Our way, the way is not a random path. Our way begins from coherent understanding. It is a way that aims at preserving knowledge of who we are, knowledge of the best way we have found to relate each to each, each to all, ourselves to other people, all to our surroundings. If your individual lives have a worthwhile aim, that aim should be a purpose inseparable from the way. ~Armah
I must shout out Catherine Salliard of iCi for her generous hospitality. Also, special thanks to Glenora Wine Cellars and Nicole DeCicco of Upstate Wine Co for donating the finest NY State sparkling wine.
